Lake swimming, 2010  -  Aug. 3  -  Swim # 9

Last night's lake swim saw perfect conditions. Pleasant air and water temperature. No wind, nor waves.

John Burke was the only one who could go the full length of approximately 5000m all around.
Excellent achievement John!
The 2nd group covered ca. 3500m, which is still significant.

Carol Anne held two more athletes close to about 2500m.

In total, a good training swim.

Lake swimming, 2010  -  July 20  -  Swim # 7

The lake class crossed the harbour and had a swim at Lake Banook this week. It appears we all found the right beach.

An odd watercraft spotted our bright caps and cleared the way as we made our way 500m along the outside edge of the rowing/paddling course, regrouping as we went, at the red buoys. Then back and forth from shore, (remember- anti-clockwise)travelling in lines and pairs, and in 10-50 stroke squares.  The bird's eye view of our squares must have looked like 11 Etch-a-Sketch squares. The ducks whose territory we invaded must have wondered why we didn't use their slick kind of GPS. (We are getting better!)  Look out synchro. Next Olympic sport: Distance Synchro.

Eventually the "Babies" took the most direct course they could, avoiding fishing rods and managing not to get tangled in the lake salad, back to the beach. From the 500m shore mark back out to the kayak course everyone else sculled the full distance, suffering their way across. Then it was a pleasure to return to freestyle and cruise back to the beach to reunite with the babies, to find all pairs of footwear awaiting our return.

A few more swimmers than usual noted the water was at a pleasing temperature and went sans wet-suit. Only the one with the tiniest Speedo seemed to be hugging his body to keep warm at the end of class, but he was not spotted shivering this time.

Lake swimming, 2010  -  July 6  -  Swim # 5

Our second Kearney lake swimming class of the summer was nice; a good workout. Among the training exercises performed was blocking.

The water was great and lots of people came out, despite the weather not being ideal.

See you all again soon.

Lake swimming, 2010  -  June 29  -  Swim # 4

The 4th lake swim of the year was tremendous. A nice, structural work-out, one and a half hours long, it was all around a good evening of training. Chocolate lake was warm, with mist over the water.

We're looking forward to our class next week.

See you all then.

Lake swimming, 2010  -  June 22  -  Swim # 3

Last night's lake training (6:15 pm to 7:45 pm) was tough. The lake wasn't
as warm as MacKay Lake, where we hold our training camps.
But we had a well structured evening, with fast sprints, hunts and
distance. Despite Carol Anne's tackle of Matthias, he managed to escape the interference, and finished, allowing the team for which he swam to win the event.

All in all, it was a great evening.

We'll see everyone soon.

Yesterday, at Chocolate lake, was Platypus' second lake swim class.

It was a nice training session; structured, and lots of fun. 12 people were there in total; the babies, and Janice Gaudet... And there was a good performance by Peter Theriault and Richard (Eric) Woodburn.

We're looking forward to next week!

Lake swimming, 2010  -  June 8  -  Swim # 1

This year's first lake swim, put on by Platypus, was a success, with 13 participants swimming together at Chocolate lake. It was a little chilly to begin with, but everyone enjoyed themselves through the evening.

We're looking forward to next week's meet, again at Chocolate lake.

Triathlon Training Camp

           May 28th, 29th, & 30th, 2010

What could be better than a triathlon camp in an ancient town filled with history, white sandy bottom lakes with 20 degree Celsius water, perfect roads, no traffic, and wonderful meals in the dining room of a venerable old manse?  There were great training partners and an awesome German coach!  Nope it's not Europe- it's Shelburne, Nova Scotia!!!

This past weekend I attended a triathlon training camp with Matthias Jaepel of Platypus METT. It was a wonderful experience and excellent training!
